MOSH faq

general

What exactly is MOSH?

MOSH is a mobile content site where community members upload, distribute, find and manage content to be viewed and enjoyed on mobile devices. With MOSH, anything from applications like mobile games, to videos, blogs, songs or photos are now accessible and distributable on your mobile device.

How does it work?

There are three key elements to MOSH:

  1. 1. A website
  2. 2. A mobile website
  3. 3. An application for mobile devices (available for download on Nokia devices only)

The website is your main source for accessing the wide range of content available through MOSH. It is here where you can create your profile, upload content, manage your collections and specify which selects to send to your mobile device as mobile feeds.

The mobile website is where users with both Nokia and non-Nokia devices can access mobile feeds and view the MOSH service.

The application allows users quick access to MOSH from their Nokia device.

getting started

What is a MOSH member?

A MOSH member is a person that has registered and created a profile on MOSH. People must register in order to upload content, share content or create collections.

How do I become a member?

Becoming a member is simple. Click on the "Register to Upload" button on the search bar. Create a username and password and you're all set. Once you're a user, you can then get to work on creating your profile. Upload a photo of yourself, specify which type of mobile device you have, showcase your best piece of content, share a little bit about yourself and most importantly, begin looking for great content.

But remember - you must be over 13 years old to use the service.

Why should I say what type of device I have?

If you specify the type of device you use, you can cut through incompatible content and filter MOSH specifically for content that will work on your device.

Can I access content without being a member?

You can access content online, but cannot do things like comment or rate content. Please note that you are always bound by the MOSH terms and conditions when you access, browse, or download content from MOSH. Read the MOSH terms and conditions at http://mosh.nokia.com/terms.

You must, however, be a member to upload content, create collections, perform a seek, to send them to your mobile device, or to share mobile pieces with your friends. Registration is recommended to get the most out of MOSH.

Why do you need my email address?

When you register we will send you an e-mail to confirm your identity, protecting your rights as well as the rights of others. We may also need to send you communications from time to time. Read the MOSH terms and conditions and privacy policy for full details on how we may use the information you provide us when registering.

If MOSH is a global service why is it only in English?

While currently available only in English, we plan to launch localized versions of MOSH in a number of major languages as soon as possible.

using mosh

uploading & downloading content

What do you mean when you say create?

Creating on MOSH means to upload or publish content.

What types of things can be uploaded to MOSH?

MOSH members can create anything from mobile device applications to individual pieces of content such as photos or videos. As mobile devices continue to develop, so too will the types of content available on MOSH. We do insist that MOSH members keep the site "clean" that means upload only content that is appropriate for everyone to enjoy and that you legally have the right to upload. For more info, please read our community guidelines

What types of things can be viewed and downloaded from MOSH?

All types of content will be available to download from MOSH, from applications to individual pieces of content such as photos or video. All content comes from the MOSH community.

Is there a limit to how much I can upload or download?

Members are able to upload individual content items up to a maximum size of 100MB per item. Overall, there is a very generous monthly upload quota that is higher than any user will probably need. There is no quota to the amount of content that can be downloaded.

What about virus protection for downloaded content?

All uploaded content and applications will be automatically screened for viruses before they are made available for download on MOSH. We cannot guarantee that all uploaded content is free from viruses, so please use good judgement when downloading.

Can I upload my own previews?

You can upload previews for applications or games using the "Manage Previews" feature available after upload or from the edit page. Previews will be generated automatically for you if you upload an image, video, or audio. No previews will be available for documents at this time.

I chose 'Download.' What's next?

When a MOSH user downloads the content to their PC, they are able to "sideload" the content to their device using any one of several methods based on device support and personal preference. These methods may include Bluetooth, infrared, e-mail, software provided with your device, or by using a cable.

I just uploaded something and it shows up as 'pending' in My Uploads. What does that mean?

All uploaded content must be screened for viruses before it can be seen by the MOSH community. When you see 'pending' in My Uploads it simply means that the item is being screened for viruses, and as a result, is not available for anyone on MOSH to view just yet. Once the item has been successfully screened it will go live and the 'pending' message will disappear.

What is a 'showcase?'

A showcase is a specific content item or collection that you would like to feature more prominently than the others. Your showcase can be chosen from anything you've uploaded. You select the showcase item by clicking on 'My Uploads' or 'My Collections' and then selecting 'showcase.' You may showcase only one content item or collection at a time, but can change your showcase at any time.

understanding collections

What is a collection?

The term collection refers to the way in which content items are organized in the MOSH community. Members can create a collection containing their own content, another member's content, or a combination of both. Think of a collection as a folder used to organize content - for example, skateboarding videos or cool mobile games. When you register, a collection is already made for you, so you can begin collecting right away.

How are collections organized?

Collections are entirely defined by the MOSH community. MOSH members can make any type of collections they choose and name and organize them in any way they wish, so long as they do not contain offensive or inappropriate material. Members can choose the order in which items appear.

Can collections be seen by other MOSH users?

Users can enable their collections to be made public or private depending on their preference. Marking a collection 'public' means everyone on MOSH can view or access your collection. Marking a collection 'private' means that only you can view or access your collection.

I want to create a new collection. What do I do?

You can create new collections at any time by going to 'My Collections.' At the top of the 'My Collections' page you will see a button to 'Create New Collection.' There you are able to name your new collection, write a description, add an icon or graphic and set privacy settings. You can also create a new collection at any time while browsing for content. Near the top of all content detail pages is a 'Get' button, which has an 'Add to Collection' option. When you choose it, a box will appear listing all of your existing collections, and an option to 'create new collection.' When you select 'create new collection' you will be prompted to enter in a title and description for your new collection.

"love it" & "leave it"

What are the "Love it" and "Leave It" buttons for?

The "Love it" button is used to spotlight content you deem exceptional. The "Leave it" button is for content you are less impressed with. You can love or leave collections or individual pieces of content. The number of "love its" each piece of content receives is added to member profiles and content pages, thereby increasing rankings for both content and its member.

Why should I love or leave something?

Clicking "love it" or "leave it" on a piece of content is useful in showing the rest of the community that you liked or disliked it and that you've given it your vote of approval or disapproval. The number of your loves and hates also appears next to individual content items and collections, so your votes can affect the profile of those items.

Who sees my loves and leaves?

Your loves and leaves are visible to the entire MOSH community. Your "love it" will increase the rating of that content and that member, and your "leave it" will have the opposite effect.

How do my loves and leaves show up?

Loves and leaves appear on your own profile page as well as next to the content item that was loved or left. For example, a collection entitled "Crazy" could have 523 "love its" and 132 "leave its." That allows other users in the community to see how a particular piece of content is being received.

sharing

How do I share content?
Sharing is when you forward a specific MOSH collection or content item to someone else. This can be done from the individual content or collection page by clicking the "Share" button. Content can be sent via SMS, email, or a MOSH message. When you click "Share," an overlay appears in which you enter the recipient's info.
Does my friend have to be a MOSH user for me to share with them?
If you forward something via SMS or email to someone who is not a MOSH user, they will still be able to view that piece of content (assuming that they have a compatible mobile device, PC etc.). However, if they wish to comment on that content, view the entire collection or forward it to someone else, then they will need to register with MOSH. If you wish to send someone a MOSH message, the recipient must be a registered member of MOSH.
Is there a quota for sharing content?
There is no limit for sharing via email, but there is a daily limit of 20 SMS shares per day.

rankings

How are member rankings viewed?

There are many ways to view member rankings. Users can view members by ranking or member rankings can be viewed on member's individual profile pages. Users can search for individual members or look at popular content items to link to publisher rankings.

How are member rankings calculated?

Experience points are awarded for activity. The total number of these points determines a member's ranking the member with the most points is ranked number one, and so on. Examples of how to gain points include uploading content, creating collections, downloading collections, commenting on collections, etc.

Are there any advantages to being the top-ranked member?

The most popular content items will be featured on the site, as will the most popular members. As your ranking increases, so does your exposure to the MOSH community.

Are there any detriments to being the lowest ranked member?

There are no penalties to having a low rank. No members are eliminated due to a poor ranking. Of course, the more activity you promote and participate in, the more likely your ranking will increase, and higher ranked members are more likely to be sought out by users looking for top content and collections.

How are most popular tags and content sorted?

Popular content and tags are sorted dynamically based on the amount of traffic accessing it. This ensures that the top-rated items are a true reflection of what is really happening within the community.

tagging, filtering, & searching

What is a Tag?

Tags are a way of assigning descriptors to individual content that makes the content searchable to the community. For example, say you make a video about New York, some relevant tags for it might be: NYC, city, Big_Apple, video, etc. Tags should be one word only, or multiple words separated by a character, such as underscores (Big_Apple). Multiple tag entries are separated by a space.

Is there a limit to the number of tags I can assign to any one piece of content?

There are no limits to the number of tags that you can assign to your content. But remember to keep your tags relevant to the content to which they refer. Irrelevant tags will generate poor search results for all MOSH users.

Can I add tags to a piece of content that isn't mine?

Yes, you can add additional tags to content, but only if you are a registered user. However please be courteous when tagging others' content.

Can I delete tags from a piece of content that isn't mine?

No. You cannot delete tags from something that belongs to another user.

Can I search for other MOSH users?

Yes, you can search for other MOSH users. This can be done by keyword search, or through browsing the people category in the left hand side of your screen.

device compatibility

Does MOSH only work with Nokia devices?

While the service is optimized for use on Nokia devices, the service is compatible with all mobile handsets, provided they support the kind of content you are downloading and that you are able to access the Internet. Please note that Nokia does not test for any compatibility issues.

Will all content work on all phones?

Most content will work on a large number of devices. However, there are always older devices and different capabilities, so MOSH leaves it to users to judge which content will work best on their device. Since there is such a wide variation of device capabilities for applications and games, however, we allow users to search MOSH for application or game content that is compatible for their specific mobile device to ensure that they are accessing content that will work. For more information, consult our special FAQ section devoted to applications and games.

applications & games

Can I add previews for the applications and games I load?

Yes. After uploading an application or game, you will be given the option to add previews. Simply click the 'Manage Previews' button, and you will be taken to a page where you can add preview images and captions for them, and arrange the way they will appear with your content.

Can I modify my preview images once I've saved them?

Is the content protected or monitored in any way?

Strict content guidelines are established in the user agreement. In addition, the MOSH community has the ability to 'Report Abuse' for any material they feel is inappropriate. The MOSH editorial team will review and, if necessary, remove reported content. MOSH will pull any item of content after notification of a copyright violation in the manner required by law.

How do you deal with pornographic or offensive material?

Any content reported as inappropriate will be examined by the MOSH editorial team. If it is found to be pornographic, explicit or offensive it will be removed from the service and the uploader will be notified that their content item has been removed.

Are there any repercussions for having your content removed?

Who owns the content I publish on MOSH?

understanding seek

What is seek?

SEEK allows MOSH users to make requests for content they want and don't see on MOSH. The community can then respond with suggestions or custom created content answering the 'SEEK'. SEEK allows the rapidly growing, and global, MOSH community to connect with one another and to obtain content not yet on MOSH, or even content that doesn't yet exist.

There you are able to name your new seek, write a description, and add preferred content types and phone compatibility. You can also create a new seek at any time while browsing for content by clicking "Seek it" at the top or bottom of browse pages. When somebody responds to your seek, you'll receive an e-mail from MOSH with a link to the response, so you'll never miss a suggestion from another MOSH member.

I want to respond to a seek. What do I do?

When you find a seek you like, click on its title to view more details. On this page, click the "Respond" button. You'll be able to respond by uploading new content, or respond with content or collections you have stored in My Collections. You can also add a text-only response. Once you've chosen your response, you can add a comment and finish. Your response will show up in the next few minutes.

Do I have to be a MOSH member to view or create a seek?

All site visitors can see seeks and their responses. If you want to create a seek or respond to a seek yourself, you'll have to register.

What is the 'best response' and how is it chosen?

The MOSH community chooses the best response. When looking at responses to a seek, users can click "view" to see more details about the content or collection being used as a response. At the top of that page, users can rate it as a response by either "loving" or "leaving" the response.
