small convenience store owners, you can easily dry your salmon steaks by hanging them from a tree outside your shop. more convenient and decorative to boot.

One area of Guangzhou is like the whole of China compressed into a single market. You've got men squatting on the street filletting fish with rusty cleavers, skinning live frogs with their bare hands, frog's blood spattered on their sandaled feet, a man with a cage of live rabbits, and next to it a skinned rabbit carcass cleaved in two, with the claws and teeth still on, next to that a net of live snakes, a muddy tray of live prawns, a cow stomach hanging from a hook, the smell of all these things, and then I arrived at the shoe shop and bought my nice white trainers.
